Kathmandu, Oct 12: A ‘National Guidelines on Suicide Risk Assessment and Management, 2083’ has been unveiled with the aim of identifying suicide risk in a timely manner and ensuring access to appropriate support, treatment, and services for individuals in distress. 
Minister for Health and Food Hygiene, Nisha Mehta, and Acting Director General of the Department of Health Services, Dr Krishna Paudel, among others, unveiled the guidelines at a program held here on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2026.
The guidelines aim to systematize the processes of identifying suicide risk, determining risk levels, formulating safety plans, providing initial support for suicide prevention, and referring individuals for further treatment as needed. It provides technical guidance to health workers on assessing the condition of individuals at risk of suicide and delivering services that are respectful, safe, and evidence-based. 
Furthermore, the guidelines are expected to help enhance the capacity of the health service system to identify at-risk individuals early and provide necessary support and treatment. It incorporates provisions for risk assessment and management aligned with the tiered service delivery system. 
On the occasion, Minister Mehta said that the introduction of the guidelines marks a significant initiative to strengthen the health service system for the timely identification and appropriate management of suicide risk. 
The Department expects to ensure the timely identification of individuals at risk of suicide, along with access to necessary support and treatment, through the effective implementation of the guidelines via coordination and collaboration among federal, provincial, and local governments, health workers, and the community.
