Ukraine's Zelensky in Berlin for talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Berlin on Tuesday for a visit focused on shoring up support for his country's fight against Russia's invasion.

"The key issues are our diplomatic coordination -- with important meetings ahead -- strengthening our air defence, and supporting our energy sector," Zelensky wrote in a post on X.

Germany is among Ukraine's most important military, financial and humanitarian supporters, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has repeatedly underscored his backing for the country.

Zelensky's visit to Germany comes after US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff announced that Ukrainian, Russian and US officials will hold talks in Abu Dhabi next week in a bid to push forward peace negotiations.

Zelenksy's visit to Berlin coincides with a conference on security and defence, with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda delivering the opening address.

The Ukrainian leader said he would take part in that conference during his stay in Berlin.

The conference is expected to focus mainly on the Ukraine war and worries about the growing threat to Europe from Russia.

"We all have an interest in security, stability, and protecting the rules-based international order," Zelensky said in his post. "And we must work together to turn these principles into concrete decisions and actions."

Germany is also planning on hosting a gathering of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing" -- a group of Ukraine's most significant allies and supporters -- in mid-November, according to remarks by Merz last week.
